Taimur Baig

Managing Director and Chief Economist

Taimur Baig, Ph.D., heads economics as well as macro strategy for interest rate, credit, currency, and equities at DBS Group Research. He also advises the bank on risk management and investment strategy.

Prior to joining DBS, Dr. Baig was a Principal Economist in the Economic Policy Group, Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). Earlier he spent nine years at Deutsche Bank’s Singapore office, where his last position was Managing Director and Chief Economist, Asia. Before Deutsche Bank, he was based in Washington, DC, at the headquarters of the International Monetary Fund, for eight years, where his last position was Senior Economist.

Dr. Baig has published extensively for both specialists and a general audience, on areas including monetary policy in a deflationary environment, exchange rate regime determination, demographics, energy sector, frontier markets, fiscal policy efficacy, and financial market contagion.

Dr. Baig sits as a council member for the Asian Financial Think Tank, Economic Society of Singapore, and Women’s World Banking.

Dr. Baig holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He attended London School of Economics and Wabash College for his B.A. in Economics.

Edris Boey

Associate director, enterprise risk management (ESG)

Edris Boey is Assistant Director of Enterprise Risk Management (ESG) at Eastspring Investments' head office based in Singapore, and is responsible for overseeing ESG risks, including the interpretation and implementation of ESG-related regulations, across the organisation which has presence in more than 10 jurisdictions. She works closely with the firm’s Sustainability Team, ESG Specialists in Investment Team as well as the various local risk and compliance teams to provide subject-matter expertise in the management of ESG risks. Edris’ career in sustainability spans across investment, consulting and in-house corporate capacities. Before joining Eastspring, Edris developed and maintained the Responsible Investment Approach at Maitri Asset Management, which won various accolades and her leadership in the ESG investing space was recognised. Prior to that, she managed sustainability strategy, reporting, and compliance at a listed industrial conglomerate in Singapore.

Dr David Broadstock

Senior Research Fellow & Head, Energy Economics Division

National University of Singapore

Dr David Broadstock is an economist with around 15 years of experience, most of which in Asia. He has worked within academia, consulting and strategic policy research (thinktanks) and is specialised in the areas of energy and environmental economics, with recent research concentrating on areas of green and sustainable finance. Topics he researches on include: ESG integration in investment; understanding the trends and determinants of green bond pricing; evaluating commodity price trends and connectivity; and reviewing the effectiveness of carbon pricing and climate finance practices.

David is a Senior Research Fellow with the Energy Studies Institute (ESI) where he also heads the Energy Economics Division, and also a Research Affiliate with the Sustainable and Green Finance Institute (SGFIN), both housed within NUS. Through these roles David regularly interacts with government agencies, research foundations, policy makers and industry leaders to develop and implement strategic research to support sustainable economic development for Singapore.

As an academic David has published in high level journals spanning accounting, finance, management and economics, and enjoys a healthy citation profile. David is Editor for The Energy Journal, and sits on the editorial boards of the British Journal of Management and Resources, Conservation & Recycling Advances. David frequently engages with media, and has been interviewed or quoted by CNA (online and TV), Reuters, Straits Times and CGTV, among others.

James Cheo

James Cheo is Chief Investment Officer, Southeast Asia for Global Private Banking and Wealth at HSBC. Mr. Cheo is a member of the Global Investment Committee for Private Banking and Wealth Management and also a member of the Regional Investment Committee in Asia. In his role, he spearheads the development of investment strategies across all asset classes for private banking and wealth management clients in Southeast Asia. Prior to re-joining HSBC Private Banking, James was Senior Investment Strategist at Bank of Singapore, where he was responsible for asset allocation and thematic research. Before that, James assumed Investment Strategist roles at Barclays Wealth Asia. From 2004 to 2009, James served as Senior Economist at the Monetary Authority of Singapore, where he was part of the team that formulated policy actions for Singapore during the 2008 Global Financial Crisis. With his knowledge and wealth of experience, his investment views are frequently sought after. He has established a strong media profile, with appearances on notable financial media including Bloomberg, CNBC, Channel News Asia, Channel 8 Mandarin News; and printed publications such as the Financial Times, Straits Times, Business Times. James graduated with First Class Honours in Finance from Nanyang Technological University. He was awarded the Chartered Financial Analyst charter in 2007.

Su Yen Chia

Su Yen collaborates with Asian regulators to craft a responsible regulatory eco-system for the Asia crypto industry and serves as the spokesperson for the Alliance’s membership body.

Su Yen was previously with Euroclear Bank where she served as Deputy CEO and authorized bank officer for the HK Branch. She actively engaged with government authorities to promote Euroclear’s platform as an enabler of a secure cost-efficient solution for cross-border capital flows to Asia’s financial markets. Su Yen also served as the Head of Government Relations, Asia Pacific, for Barclays Bank and Vice-President of Public Policy for Credit Suisse AG.

A graduate of Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs who underwent an attachment with UNDP-NY office, she is passionate about leveraging technology to promote inclusive societies and financial diversity.

Mara Chiorean

Mara is a seasoned corporate sustainability strategist with 12+ years of in-depth ESG experience in Asia Pacific. She joined ANZ in 2021 as Director in the ANZ Sustainable Finance International team, based in Singapore, to provide technical sustainability expertise. Before joining ANZ, as the Southeast Asia Lead for Global Community Impact at Johnson & Johnson she spearheaded the innovative finance and impact investment strategy for the Asia Pacific region.  Prior to that, Mara headed CSR Asia Hong Kong - a pioneering sustainability advisory firm. She was also an Honorary Lecturer at the University of Hong Kong teaching Corporate Sustainability, Shared Value and Inclusive business. Mara holds a Master’s Degree in Environmental and Energy Management at Bocconi University in Italy and a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics at Transylvania University in Romania. She is a graduate of the Oxford Scenarios Program at the Said Business Scholl, University of Oxford and a systems change practitioner at the School of Systems Change of the Forum for the Future.

Aziz Durrani

Aziz has over 20 years of experience in international banking and finance, and in setting, enforcing and providing training on regulatory policies and standards, including climate risk and sustainable finance. At the ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research office (AMRO), Aziz is responsible for the provision of capacity development and technical assistance to ASEAN countries and China, Hong Kong, Japan and Korea.

Aziz previously worked for 5 years at The SEACEN Centre, providing technical assistance and delivering training programmes to SEACEN’s 35 Central Banks and Regulatory Authority stakeholders across Asia on issues related to Supervision, Financial Stability, Risk Management, Climate Risk and Financial Market Infrastructures.

Before joining SEACEN, Aziz spent 7 years working as a Senior Technical Specialist at the Bank of England / Prudential Regulation Authority, undertaking asset quality and Non-Performing Loan reviews globally and managing the wholesale Concurrent Stress Testing programme. Aziz began his career in the Strategy, Finance and Economics practice of Andersen Business Consulting in London, and later worked at Standard Chartered Bank, covering the Origination, Structuring and Syndication of loan products across EMEA markets. He also worked at Lloyds Banking Group in Asset and Liability Management and in Leveraged Finance Loan Restructuring and Workout.

Aziz is a graduate in Economics and Philosophy from The University of Nottingham, UK, and also studied for an M.Sc. in Computing for Industry at Imperial College London.

Phillip Gillespie

Phil is Co-CEO of B2C2, the counterparty of choice in the institutional crypto market. He joined the firm in 2018 to lead expansion in Asia, successfully securing B2C2’s position as the number one foreign crypto liquidity provider in Japan. In 2020, B2C2 was acquired by Japanese financial group SBI.

Previously, Phil worked at Goldman Sachs where he oversaw the FX G10 business and commodities trading for EMEA, as part of the systematic market making team. Prior to that, he was an FX voice and systematic trader at Barclays and JPMorgan.

Phil holds a BSc in Industrial and System Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology and an MSc in Financial Engineering from the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley.

Huzefa has an extensive experience of working across technologies and driving regional businesses in organizations such as Oracle, Sun Microsystems etc. He led the Security Solutions business for Oracle, while at Sun Microsystems he was responsible for the Software business.   

Tobias Gondrom

Mr Tobias Gondrom joined UOB in 2018 and is the Group Chief Information Security Officer. He is responsible for ensuring the end-to-end information security in UOB and implementing all cyber security initiatives across the Bank.

Tobias has more than 20 years of experience in information security, software development, application security, cryptography, electronic signatures and global standardisation strategies. He has held various roles in independent software vendors and large global corporations in the technology, financial and government sectors. Prior to joining UOB, Tobias was the Chief Technology Officer (Security) at Huawei.

He holds a London Business School Sloan Masters degree in Leadership and Strategy.

From 2014 to 2018, Tobias was a member of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Administrative Oversight Committee (IAOC) and the chair of the IETF Trust. From 2004 to 2018, he was also the chair of multiple IETF workings groups in the security domain, the latest one being the chair of the DDoS Open Threat Signaling (DOTS) working group and a member of the IETF security directorate until 2018.

Since 2007, Tobias has also held leadership roles for the Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP), a global not-for-profit organisation aimed at improving software security, including as a member of the board from 2014 to 2017 and former global chairman. In addition, Tobias is former a board member of the Cloud Security Alliance (CSA) Hong Kong and Macau Chapter and a former member of the NIS Platform of the European Commission, where he advised the European Union on Cyber Security and Risk Management.

Ram Gopalakrishnan

Ram Gopalakrishnan is a Director, Private Equity and Global Co-Head of ESG at Affirma Capital and is responsible for originating and managing private equity investments and for leading Affirma Capital’s ESG initiatives. Prior to joining Affirma Capital, Ram was a Director at Standard Chartered Private Equity, which he joined in 2009, and was based in Singapore, Lagos and Dubai. Ram has been actively involved in over 15 private equity transactions representing over $1bn of investments across various emerging markets.

Prashant Joshi

Prashant has 18 years experience in Asia, Europe & the US in financial services regulatory affairs and reforms with an increasing focus on sustainability and ESG. He has worked on assessing the business impacts of emerging ESG and sustainable finance related regulation and standards as well as analysing how markets consequently develop, fragment, and the obligations on multiple industry actors. Prashant has represented on multiple industry bodies including the ASIFMA Sustainable Finance Committee, ISDA ESG Working Group, and the ASIFMA-ISDA Public Policy Committee.

Prior to this she was the Head of Financial and Operational Risk in a leading insurance company in Singapore, with previous experience in leading investment banks.

Jed Khoo

He has over 25 years of experience in financial services across 1LOD, 2LOD, 3LOD and external audit. These diverse roles were in UBS, BNP Paribas Wealth Management and PwC. Just prior to OCBC, Jed ran his own risk consulting practice. He has also spoken at Singapore Management University and adjunct-lectured at the Singapore Institute of Technology on risk and internal audit.

Robert Luu

In this role, he’s worked closely with Galvanize’s customer base to implement all aspects of the HighBond and Robotics platform for Risk, Audit, Compliance, IT/IT Risk, Finance, and Operation functions including data automation and continuous monitoring programs in a variety of industries such as banking, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, retail, oil and gas, healthcare, manufacturing, hospitality, education, and the public sector. Shivkumar Mahadevan

Shiv is currently the Chief Risk Officer, CCIB at Standard Chartered Bank (SCB); with overall risk responsibility for Corporate, Commercial & Institutional Banking (CCIB) clients across all geographies.

Shiv chair’s SCB's CCIB Risk Committee which oversees all the risks associated with the CCIB business (i.e. both financial and nonfinancial risks) and is also part of the Group Risk Management Team, Remuneration Forum, Underwriting Committee & Investment Committee. He is responsible for risk managing a portfolio of over USD 500 billion spanning across 65 countries, managed via a team of over 500 Risk Officers. Besides exercising direct control responsibility for Credit Risk and Market Risk profile of the Group, he is extensively involved in maintaining alignment with risk appetite by rebalancing risks or controls that may be required in response to internal and external factors.

Prior to this, he was the Regional Chief Risk Officer (RCRO), ASEAN & South Asia, at SCB and responsible for all risk types for the region. Before the RCRO role, Shiv was Senior Regional Credit Officer (SRCO), Asia; providing credit risk oversight for all Corporate, Institutional & Commercial clients across Asia. He has also been the Head of Credit Risk - Specialized Finance, Funds and Traded Products, where he was responsible for providing global credit risk oversight covering all Financial Markets products, Acquisition Finance, Project & Export Finance, Aviation & Shipping Finance and Structured Finance.

Shiv has been in the financial services industry for over 28 years, of which the last 23 years have been with SCB where he has held various senior Risk roles across Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai and Mumbai – covering multiple geographies around the world. Before joining the financial services industry, Shiv worked for 3 years with Tata Motors, India.

Shiv holds a degree in Electrical Engineering and a Post Graduate Diploma in Financial Management (PGDM) from Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bangalore.

He is passionate about mentoring and coaching talent. He also occasionally goes in as a guest speaker at the Singapore Management University and was recently a Panellist at the “RiskMinds” Conference. Shiv is a Member of SCB's Global Diversity & Inclusion Council and leads the initiative for the Risk Function. Corporate Treasurer awarded Shiv for the best approval turnaround times for Cash Management Services for the year CY2014. He was also awarded the Leading Risk Practitioner by the Asian Banker in 2015 and was conferred the IBF Fellow in 2016 by the Institute of Banking & Finance, Singapore.

Sanchit Maini

Sanchit is an actuary and risk manager having worked in the insurance industry for over 20 years across various firms and actuarial consulting. His experience covers risk management, financial management and reporting, product development and propositions, business planning and market entry. His work experience spans various markets across Asia, Africa, the UK, US and France.

Sanchit is currently Chief Financial and Operational Risk Officer covering risk management for Prudential’s Asia and Africa businesses.

Sanchit is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia, India and Singapore (FIAA, FIAI, FSAS) and a Chartered Enterprise Risk Actuary (CERA). He holds the Qualified Risk Director designation from the DCRO Institute.

 

Carney Mak

Carney leads the investment and portfolio management activities related to fintech, cryptocurrency ventures capital portfolio at FXHB Asset Management,. He has also played his part at the Wealth Management Institute (WMI), founded by Temasek & GIC to provides first-class educational sessions and consultation for family office that would like to venture into crypto-related investments/portfolios.

Prior to these roles, he held regional and leadership positions in banking, payments and fintech firms.

As a strong advocate for fintech and cryptocurrency since 2017, Carney played his part in the early community building for associations in Singapore. He was part of the subcommittee at (ACCESS) Association of Crypto Currency Enterprise and Startups Singapore, a member at (SFA) Singapore Fintech Association, and (BAS) Blockchain Association Singapore. Carney has join the evaluation panel for Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) FSTI Proof-of-Concept Grant in 2023, the scheme aims to provides funding support for the experimentation, development and dissemination of nascent innovative technologies in the financial services sector and also serve as an Industry Advisor for Alibaba Cloud – Singapore Innovation Accelerator.

Carney's insights on cryptocurrencies, Web 3.0, metaverse, NFTs and payments have been featured on several newswires and radio station such as Bloomberg, MoneyFM89.3, Coinlive and Forkast News. Apart from speaking at international events, Carney also volunteers as a guest/adjunct lecturer at local polytechnics & universities. He will be joining the adjunct faculty team at Singapore Management University (SMU) for their Academic Calendar 2023/2024.

Prior to joining UOB, Melissa spent a decade at Bank of America where she led the firm’s ESG efforts in Asia Pacific.  Her role included client facing advisory on sustainability, supporting a sustainable finance strategy in the region as well as the implementation of corporate ESG initiatives across risk, social investment and environmental footprint.

Gareth Nicholson

Gareth Nicholson joined Nomura in July 2021 as Chief Investment Officer and Head of Discretionary Portfolio Management for International Wealth Management. He is based in Singapore.

Gareth works closely with Nomura’s Global Markets and Investment Banking businesses to expand the firm’s product offerings and spearhead a streamlined, solutions-driven coverage effort for high-net-worth clients, external asset managers and family offices. With a strong institutional investment background, he creates and manages DPM strategies for fixed income, equity and multi-asset portfolios, while providing risk management support.

Gareth has over 16 years of experience in financial markets. Prior to Nomura, he was Head of Fixed Income DPM at Bank of Singapore, where he was also a member of its investment committee.
